The Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) is scheduled to serve-off its first tournament of the year today with a grand open doubles tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall beginning at 6pm.
President of the Association Gokarn Ramdhani told Stabroek Sport that the aim of this tournament is to get some of the association’s top players back into competitive action.
He said that a tournament of this nature usually attracts a larger number of players than the singles tournament.
“Doubles tournaments usually have more players taking part because many players only play that form of the game while others prefer having a partner if they have not played in a while and I think it is a good way to awaken players’ interest in the sport right now,” he said.
The GBA president also said that he expects to see a very high level of play in the tournament as it will feature a few former national players.
“I expect a very competitive tournament and for that reason I have chosen the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
“I know that some of the top players may be tempted to throw themselves off the floor to retrieve shots and in order to encourage competitive spirit and minimize injury I think that the wooden surface is the best choice,” he said.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude tomorrow evening with the presentation of prizes for winners and outstanding performers.
