Left arm spinner Shan Jairaj took 5-0 for Cornelia Ida (CI) when they opposed Zeelugt in the first round of the Barakat Brothers Twenty20 knockout competition that was organized for teams in the West Demerara area last Saturday.
CI won the toss and opting to take first strike scored 137-7 from their 20 overs with Imtiaz Hack leading the way with 67, decorated with eight fours. Tavindra Mangra took 3-14 bowling for Zeelugt who were then routed for a meagrer 52 from 12.4 overs.
Only Eon Singh (13) and Neil Bissessar with 12 were able to offer resistance to Jairaj.
In other games played on that day, Zeeburg defeated Shamrock; Windsor Forest lost to Parika; and Ruby overcame Vergenoegen while on Sunday Meten-Meer-Zorg A scored a comfortable nine-wicket win over their B counterparts.
Parika invited Windsor Forest and held them to 130-5 from their 20 overs. Mohanram Chatram with 58 (4x6s; 3x4s) and Lalta Sucknand 29 (3x4s) led the batting against the bowling of Jason Heyliger who took 2-5 for Parika who in reply reached 133-4 in 19.1 overs with Alim Mohammed hitting a breezy 74 that included four sixes and three fours, while Inshan ally offered support with 17 (2x4s).
At Meten-Meer-Zorg West, Vergenoegen made 124-9 from their allotted overs against Ruby. Fazil Goberdhan with 41 (3x4s; 1×6) and Alwyck Legall 28 (4x4s) were the principal scorers. Ravi Ramotar took 3-27 bowling for Ruby who made 125-7 to win by three wickets inside the final over with Rayan Seenarine 40 ( 4x4s; 1×6) and Sandy Phillip 30 (3x4s) leading the batting. Dwayne Steven took 2-19 for Vergenoegen.
On Sunday, Meten-Meer-Zorg A and B clashed at Meten-Meer-Zorg West with the B team being invited to take first strike and were bowled out for 70 in the 16th over. Only Surendra Ragunauth with 27 that included three fours offered resistance to the bowling of Sahadeo Khan (3-7), Trevor Benn and Avinish Sharadanand 2-6 each and Mahendra Nankishore 2-17.
The A team in reply made 74-1 from 10 overs with Shan Mc Kay 33 (5x4s; 1×6) and Mark Andrew 28 (2x4s; 1×6) seeing their team to victory.
In the Zeeburg/Shamrock match, no overall scores were available for the latter after the former made 237-9 with Demerara under-19 middle order batsman Balbinder Persaud making 72 (7x6s; 6x4s), Amrit Jairam 35 (3×6; 2×4) and Mandalall Doodnarine 32 (2x6s; 2x4s). Damien Howard took 3-28 bowling for Shamrock whose overall total was not indicated on the press release sent to Stabroek Sport.
