The speedy Bounty Colts point guard Kayode Murray drained a three-point dagger, with two seconds remaining, to give his team a miraculous 54-52 victory against the Junior Elites last Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA) Bryden’s second division league.
Murray who registered 19 points in the game, won it for his team when he destroyed three of the Elite defenders before pulling up for an off-balanced runner outside the three-point line which caught nothing but the back of the ring, before gently brushing the bottom of the net.
With just two seconds remaining in the game, the Elites did not manage to take a proper shot and most of the players just lay on the court as if they were still bewildered by Murray’s sensational game-winner.
The Elites had begun tasting victory when Travis Burnett cashed in on two free throws from the charity strike to give the Elites a 52-51 lead with less than 15 seconds remaining.
The Elites recovered, however, from that agonizing loss and returned the next night to produce a stunning 62-49 victory against a star–studded Ravens cast. Travis Stewart, Jermaine Slater and Marlon Chesney were the leading scorers for the Elites, contributing 15, 11 and 11 points respectively.
Kevin Lawrence was on-fire last weekend as he ignited on Saturday night for a game high of 25 points against the Bounty Colts before returning on Sunday to hit all three of his shots from behind the arch to end with 17 points.
On Saturday night, Trevor Smith (20) and Ryan Melville (15) were on point for Pepsi Sonics when they guided them to a 77-57 victory against the Ravens.
Ravens struggled early in the first half, but closed out the half on a 16-3 run the moment their coach Lugard Mohan arrived.
Also on Saturday night Panthers’ Yannick December scored 25 points to lead his team to a spectacular come-from-behind win against the Eagles, 75-69.
Panthers trailed by 12 points at halftime but started the second half on a 12-4 run before they gained the lead with a few minutes remaining in the game.
Guards Adrian Hooper and Dexter Muir led the way for Eagle with 14 and 13 points respectively while Panthers’ supporting scorer Ryan Cummings added 13 points.
The Eagles suffered their second straight loss when they were blown away by 32 points (49-81) by the Bounty Colts on Sunday night.
Murray and Onica Fraser led all scores for the victors with 18 and 19 points respectively, while Hooper and Muir added 13 and nine to lead the way for the Eagles.
The game between Nets and the Georgetown Masters has been rescheduled for the beginning of the second round of the competition.
