Hospitality must have been the last thing on the minds the Georgetown (GT ) Pioneers last Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when they blew away the Guyana United States Basketball Affiliates (GUBA) Rockers by 21 points in the first exhibition game of their Goodwill Tour.
The GUBA Rockers, who arrived in Guyana on Saturday morning to begin the inaugural US/Guyana Goodwill Tour – a tour aimed at aiding the development of basketball in Guyana – started their journey with a big loss to the GT Pioneers 26-47 in the exhibition game during the Guyana Amateur Basketball Association’s Bryden’s Second Division League.
The Rockers began the night on a warm note and presented each member of the Pioneers with tour souvenirs, but instead of showing their gratitude, the Pioneers got down to business and shot to an early 20-8 lead.
Former Junior National point guard Tommy Douglas showed no mercy as he hit his first three shots to propel the Pioneers offence early.
Douglas ended with a team-high of ten points, eight of which he scored in the first half.
Former national player Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan’ ignited in the second half to end with nine points after going 0-6 from the field in the first half.
Only two of the players for the GUBA Rocker to make an impact on the score sheet, Lester Cummings who registered a game high of 13 points and Shelly Hubbard who followed with 12 points.
