Drainage of the backlands at Buxton would be costly and uneconomical

Dear Editor,

I refer to the government’s proposal to drain the backlands at Buxton and to state that this concept was addressed by the Hydraulics Division during the 60s and abandoned on account of the cost and other factors involved.
There is a low level 50 GD line stretching from Mon Repos to Cane Grove in this area. This area is also used as storage for rainfall and for water seeping via the porous East Demerara Water Conservancy Dam.

When you consider the ground levels involved it would be quite an engineering challenge to design an effective drainage system not only for this area but also for the front lands as well.
I am surprised that the government did not carry out its own investigations before committing itself to provide drainage for this area.

Yours faithfully,
Malcolm Alli
