The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce has decided not to institute a ban on the importation of used tyres, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.
This has been raised by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), which had concerns about the quality and lifespan of these used tyres.
Minister Manniram Prashad yesterday met with used tyre importers and minibus owners and operators to discuss the issue. After the discussions, it was decided that the importation of the used tyres will continue under the condition that the quality of the tyres will be monitored to endure durability and affordability.
The Minister said that the decision should pre-empt minibus owners from raising their fares and reassured that such increases cannot take place since Government has already reduced the tax on fuel in order to cushion the high prices, GINA said.
