Under the bling and the moves he’s
just a 13-year-old boy with talent…
Jamaican QQ may have the right dance moves and his music might be more mature than his thirteen years of age, but certain restrictions are still in place for the young singer as far as dating and girls go.
While in Guyana for the now infamous ‘Ignition Concert’ the Jamaican revealed in an interview with The Scene that he has a girlfriend but it was only after he agreed to certain conditions.
“Yes QQ has a girl in his life but that don’t mean that he could have his own way. I am still a kid which is something I don’t easily forget,” the singer said.
Between signing autographs and posing for the camera at the Wildfire Red and White Affair hours before the National Park show, QQ was the average teenager, chatting up fans and frolicking in the hot sun though the presence of his managers and a few in his local travelling circle projected the above average image.
As he sat down for the brief chat with The Scene, the singer straightened his sunglasses and the ‘bling bling’ that was dangling around his neck. He then flashed a smile and said, “What’s on ya mind?”
His charm is obvious as the moustache he is already growing. QQ first opens up about his break in the music business, which he said, came after he had returned from living in the UK and got hooked on the vibes that were hot in Jamaica at the time. He grew up singing and spent time perfecting his skills while in the UK.
QQ later found himself in studio on the island where he recorded his first song, “Poverty”. The song would go on to be a huge hit in Jamaica and win QQ rave reviews. He also captured a few firsts, such as the title of being the youngest person to have a number one song in Jamaica.
The dancing, which is rapidly setting him apart from his contemporaries comes to him naturally. QQ said the moves would enter his mind anytime, sometimes when he is relaxing and at other times when he is performing and since the ever popular ‘Stukie’ was first demonstrated publicly, he has had a host of other moves.
‘Regga Ram Jam’ is another move he mentioned that his now catching on. Within a few seconds he rattled off a few others that people now identify him with.
“Dancing is what I love and a new style would come to me often and I just buss it the next time I get a chance,” he said.
QQ said he is aware that a young crowd follows him but he pointed out that his appeal goes beyond the teenage target audience. According to him, his music has something for everyone which is why he has been able to find favour among older audiences. In the years since he has been singing, he said, a versatile style has added to his successes.
The young singer said his family, particularly his parents, has had everything to do with his climb in the music business as much as the support of his fans. He pointed out that there are many other young singers breaking into the music industry and they are finding it hard noting that in his case, a combination of things were the reason he has been able to do well.
He envisions a long stay in the business and promises that the best is yet to come. (ianaseales@yahoo.com)
