Cyclists ready for Indian Arrival Day anniversary 50-mile event
Cyclists will be back on the road today when the Bico Ice Cream 50-mile road race organized by national cycling coach Hassan Mohammed pedals off from the Wales Police station at 9am, to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo then to the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) for the finish.
Veteran and upright cyclists competing in this event will turn back at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground and proceed to the DHB for the finish.
The event is being held to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Indian arrival here in Guyana.
With cyclists of the calibre of Alonzo Greaves, John Charles, Geron Williams, Leer Nunes, Jaikarran Sukhai, Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson and Darren Allen competing, the West Demerara roadways will certainly be burning up with either fire or tyres today.
Add Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams and national junior road champion Christopher Holder to the fray and certainly fans can expect a rivalry on the road.
The veterans will have their own rivalry especially in the case of Linden Blackman and Kennard Lovell who, it seems, always try to outdo each other whether it is around the inner circuit of the National Park or on the road.
They should both be wary of each other, and with Compton Persaud coming between the two on some occasions, this category will certainly not be a two person one.
Prizes will be presented to the first six finishers overall whilst the first three juniors, veterans and upright cyclists will also receive prizes which will be distributed by Stuart May, Brand Manager Bico Ice Cream.
As is customary, eight (8) prime prizes will be up for grabs during the event.
