A trip to the airport for five Lindeners ended in tragedy yesterday morning, when the car they were in toppled on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway at Yarrowkabra, leaving a 16-year-old dead and two other persons hospitalized.
The other passengers of the car were treated for their injuries and sent away.
Dead is Mikhail Rodney of Lot 200 Third Street, Silvertown. His adopted mother, Joy Glasgow, 43, of the same address and the driver of the car they were in, Quincy Grant, 24, are patients of the Georgetown Public Hospital in stable condition.
Joy Glasgow sustained a fractured pelvis bone, while Grant has injuries to his hands, neck and face. They are patients in the institution’s open ward.
Claybourne Glasgow, 15, and Randy Carroll sustained minor injuries and were sent away after being treated.
Reports are that around 6.30 am yesterday, the five were proceeding to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, when Grant suddenly lost control and the vehicle toppled.
Rodney, who was seated behind the driver, was flung from the vehicle and from the injuries he sustained; it appears that he landed on his head.
The five were transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where Claybourne and Carroll were treated while the others were transferred to the Georgetown Hospital owing to the seriousness of their injuries.
However, Rodney was pronounced dead on arrival at the city medical institution.
At the hospital yesterday, Grant who is Joy Glasgow’s son-in-law was writhing on his bed in pain. His eyes and parts of his face were swollen and fresh blood spots were visible about his body.
His left arm was bandaged and still bleeding. He was also receiving a bottle of saline.
He told Stabroek News that his right arm was paining so badly, he felt that it might be broken.
Asked what happened, Grant said that they were on their way to the airport and he believed one of the tyres developed a problem resulting in him losing control and the eventual toppling of the car.
Joy Glasgow, meanwhile, was in better shape. She told Stabroek News that at the time of the accident the others were accompanying her to the airport as she was leaving for Trinidad on vacation.
She said everything happened so fast, she was uncertain of how exactly the accident happened or what might have caused it.
She said that the only thing she remembered was the vehicle swerving and then toppling several times. Joy Glasgow said that the accident occurred near the glass factory in the Yarrowkabra area.
In a quiet tone, the injured woman said she had adopted Rodney last year August. She described him a very jovial child who was always making jokes. She praised the medical personnel at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre for their efforts on him.
She said an x-ray revealed that she has a fractured pelvis, but added that she was not feeling much pain since she had received some medication.
