Buxton/Friendship Cane farmers on Friday received $1 million in Agro-chemicals as part of the Ministry of Agriculture’s collective compensation process.
According to a Ministry of Agriculture press release, Minister Robert Persaud indicated that the donation was a follow-up on the commitment he made to the community on April 26. Most farmers, the minister said, were recently paid an additional sum.
Among the agro-chemicals handed out were 2 4D, Ally and Round-up, the press release said, adding that the ministry procured and handed over additional quantities so that all cane farmers would benefit from the donation.
The ministry also awarded a $1 million contract to the Buxton/Fouils Neighbourhood Democratic Council for the cleaning of the Buxton/Friendship navigational canals, which are essential for the transporting of the harvested sugar-cane.
Fitzroy Miller, Chairman of the farmer’s committee, expressed appreciation on behalf of the Buxton/Friendship sugar-cane farmers for the much needed donation and pledged that the farmers would use the chemicals to improve their activities.
The ministry, the release said, will continue to support the farmers of Buxton through the improvement of drainage and irrigation facilities, planting materials and technical support to improve the community’s agricultural activities.
