The Guyana Public Service Union in a letter yesterday to President Bharrat Jagdeo called on the government to pay public service workers a 25% across-the-board interim increase in salary immediately.
The GPSU said in a press release yesterday that “this representation has been made in recognition of the enormous increase in the cost of living which has devastating if not disastrous effects on most workers, and the union being sensitive to the workers’ situation and their appeal for help to alleviate their plight and the deprivation that they, their families and dependants are experiencing.”
The union told the head of state in its letter signed by president/CEO Patrick M. Yarde that the 25% interim increase should be made to the workers in the public service “pending finalization of a salary increase award in keeping with the Agreement for the Avoidance and Settlement of Disputes.”
The GPSU also pointed out that it was aware that persons were skipping meals and that many households lack the means to provide daily meals with basic nutritional value to their families.
The union also urged Jagdeo to treat this situation “as a humanitarian issue with the urgency it deserves in the prevailing circumstances.”
