Dear Editor,
The ten years taken by three different international contractors to complete a thirty-five mile stretch of road between Charity and Supenaam in Region Two was worthy of being featured in the Guinness Book of Records. But here again, a similar situation is in the making for the district at the Suddie Hospital where massive improvement works were executed, but after some three years an X-ray Unit is still to be installed and put into use for the institution.
Up to now persons in need of this service have to travel all the way to Charity Hospital at considerable inconvenience, suffering and expense.
With taxi fares here being more costly than in any part of this country, the hardship when travelling from the far end of Supenaam becomes even worse especially in impecunious situations. In one instance I had to lend the poor parents of a child who was injured in a fall $5,000 to get to Charity Hospital for an X-ray, but although I was repaid, that money could have been spent to buy foodstuff items in these hard times.
An X-ray Unit is important for any medical institution, and the government cannot escape blame for what has happened. In a live TV programme on NCN Channel 11, Dr Bheri Ramsarran made it known that the Suddie Hospital would become fully operational by February 15 last, but since then no excuse has been given for the further delay.
Despite the residents there being well known for their complacency, much public concern has been voiced about the need for the X-ray Unit to be put into use urgently.
Yours faithfully,
Baliram Persaud
