Jeffrey Vancooten is upset
The former Thomas United footballer is peeved over the state of football in the Ancient County.
Having not viewed a game of football in Berbice in over 10 years, the North Georgetown resident was upbeat about a planned visit to the Ancient County last Sunday and thought he would take the opportunity of witnessing the final of the Linden Fresco memorial competition.
The match was played at the Scots School ground on Esplanade Road and from the outset, Vancooten said he was taken aback by the appearance of not only the ground but by the players and officials.
The ground, he declared was far too small for football and the officials were not decked out in the proper attire for referees and linesmen but in white jerseys and black pants. The state of the ground was not fit for a final, added Vancooten.
The grass, he declared was long and in his opinion the ground should be used for Under-16 footballers.
Some of the players were decked out in beach pants while others wore different coloured football hoses.
“Over a decade I have not gone to watch football in Berbice. As a concerned citizen it was appalling for me to see the conditions football is played under in Berbice. One player had on a yellow hose on one leg and a blue hose on the other.
“I don’t know if the clubs in Berbice are not sponsored like Camptown (Sunburst) and Topp XX (Bakewell),” he said.
