The youthful Everest Hikers second-division men’s team registered two victories to join compatriots Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) who also chalked up their second win in as many matches when the John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd (JFIS) second division hockey league continued over the weekend.
The Hikers defeated GCC Tigers female team 3-0 last Friday in an exciting encounter which featured the first local mixed gender match in the history of the league.
While the Tigers seemed to enjoy the greater possession, the speed and strength of the Hikers men proved too much for the female line up.
Former national Randy Hope scored the game’s first goal in the 16th minute before Jason Clarke found the back of the net in the 28th.
Promising Ryan Primo netted the game’s third goal in the 30th minute of play.
Primo, along with striker Andrew Stuart and right back Leroy Jack, were among the more promising juniors on show coming out of the successful junior summer camp of 2007.
Thirteen-year-old Marzena Fiedtkou, right back Vanessa Pires and full back Tricia Fiedtkou, all put in sterling performances in a losing effort for the Tigers.
Hikers’ men upstaged their female counterparts the Everest Divas 5-2 two days later with Primo scoring a hattrick while Shaquelle Assanah netted a double.
National female striker Cora Towler and Ashley Birkett netted one goal each in a losing cause for the Divas.
After downing the strong Old Fort challenge in their first encounter, GCC marked their second encounter with a 5-4 victory over the Carib Degenerates last Monday at Bourda.
GCC outmanoeuvred their senior counterparts in midfield throughout the match but failed to convert on a number of chances.
The well-rounded GCC attack of Stuart and Zack Gonsalves on the right and Andrew and Chris Xavier on the left, however, eventually broke through the tough Degenerates defence of Ivor Thompson and Gregory Sills.
Trevon Smith was first on the scoresheet for GCC in the 12th minute, which was supported by a double from Andrew Xavier and one each from Stuart Gonsalves and Shad Fernandes to take their winning tally to five. Timothy Jonas and Gavin Hope each netted doubles for the Degenerates.
Matches continue in the two-round JFIS League on Monday at Bourda.
