The Edward B. Beharry Group of Companies through its Champion brand products became the latest business entity in Corporate Guyana to partner with the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) when they became the official sponsor of that entity’s second division limited overs competition.
At a brief presentation ceremony held at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion yesterday, Merchandising and Promotions Manager of the sponsor Anthony Xavier handed over the sponsorship cheque with a value of $600,000.00 to treasurer of the GCA Harry Parmesar.
Prior to such being done, president of the GCA Bish Panday in a short statement congratulated the sponsor for their positive response to the application of coming on board with his entity.
“When I addressed the first Annual awards ceremony of the GCA a week ago, I mentioned that we were in discussion with two potential sponsors with relations to some new competitions and I am happy to stand here today for the launching of one of those competitions the Edward B. Beharry second division limited overs competition.”
Panday further stated “ There are many second division teams in Georgetown and the GCA has no second division limited overs competition so this sponsorship by Edward B. Beharry fills that void affording the cricketers the opportunity to play more cricket and in some cases to press their case for inclusion in their first division teams.”
Panday also told those gathered that the GCA did not see sponsorship as just a handing over of a cheque, but an opportunity for the two parties to mutually benefit from what was being done.
Xavier congratulated the GCA on their achievements to date and urged them to continue their work in the development of cricket in Georgetown.
“We at the Edward B. Beharry Group of Companies are pleased to be associated with the GCA in this venture. We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to them for inviting us to partner with them on this venture and would like to wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”
The competition is slated to commence next weekend and will be played on a league basis in two zones with the winners of each zone going up against each other in the final.
Some 20 teams including powerhouses Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) who were declared joint winners of the Cummings Electrical/ P&P Insurance sponsored Raymond Panday memorial two day second division competition, along with GCC, Demerara Cricket Club, Guyana National Industrial Corporation, Ghandi Youth Organization and Ace Warriors Cricket Clubs are slated to participate.
