The PPP government needs to stop trying to win the PNC over and recognise that opposition political parties are not there to help the government of the day. They want to replace the government regardless of how successful the policies of the governing party may be. The PNC, for all its pretence of wanting to share governance, is not there to make life comfortable for the government and as such is not really negotiating in good faith. It would be best for the PPP government, having been elected by a majority in a democratic election, to ensure that the progress of Guyana is continued regardless of the stance of the opposition. Yes, the opposition would like to be consulted about every decision that the government makes, and may want to contribute to Guyana by suggesting that a change in their policy may be a good way forward, however, the PNC is on record as saying that it does not intend to help out the government by suggesting ideas for development. The government needs to develop Guyana in spite of what opposition politicians do or say and not because of what they say.
Guyanese did not vote in a fair and free election (2006) to elect a government that does what the opposition wants. I am satisfied that there were enough votes from people who did not vote for any party to enable an opposition party to have had a decisive victory over the PPP/C at the last general election. The fact of the matter is that the opposition did not do enough to get these voters to vote for them. A clear message needs to be sent to the opposition, including the AFC. Can the AFC truly say that had the economy of Guyana grown at above 10% per year and had the government bent over backwards to accommodate the opposition parties that the AFC would have been supportive of government policies? I think not, as the AFC as well would prefer to replace the PPP regardless of the success of government policies.
