A former policeman was remanded on Friday when he appeared before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle accused of falsely obtaining police gear from the Force’s storeroom.
Parmanand Beekham, 36, of 3080 Kaikan Street, South Ruimveldt, denied the charge of obtaining by false pretence when it was read to him, saying that he was given an authorization to collect the items. However the magistrate remanded him to prison.
It is alleged that on May 6 at the Police Quartermaster Stores, Georgetown, Beekham obtained one pants, one shirt, one pair of boots and a belt, together valued $18,653 by falsely pretending that he was still a serving member of the Guyana Police Force, knowing that to be false.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail on the grounds that he was before the court for similar offences before and that Beekham was pretending to be a serving policeman.
The prosecutor explained that the defendant left the force without authorization and has since been deemed absent without leave.
Beekham, who was unrepresented during the court proceedings, told the court in his defence that his cousin who is a policeman had given him an authorization to collect the items on his behalf.
The magistrate then set the next court appearance for May 19.
