Cyclists who are interested in participating on the upcoming 26th Annual Independence three stage cycle road race that is scheduled to pedal off this weekend are being reminded that registration for the event closes today at 1600hrs.
The first stage that will see the cyclists cover a distance of 46.6 miles, will pedal off from Corriverton and proceed to New Amsterdam for the finish form 0730hrs. The second stage will pedal off from 1430hrs from the Rosignol Stelling and proceed to Carifesta Avenue for the finish covering a distance of 60.4 miles.
The third and final stage will be held the following morning from 0800 hrs covering a distance of 62 miles from Kara Kara in Linden to Homestretch Avenue in Georgetown.
Defending champion Guy Costa who completed the distance in a total time of 7hrs:16mins:36secs has indicated his intentions to defend his title this year. Six-times winner Dwayne ‘Road Hog’ Gibbs will also be participating and will be looking for his seventh title in this event that is being organized by national cycling coach Hassan Mohammed to coincide with the 42nd Independence Anniversary celebrations of Guyana.
Transportation will depart from inside the Ministry of Culture building on Main Street from 1000hrs and cyclists are also reminded to wear their club jerseys during the staging of the event. Their licence which must be an up to date document must also be presented upon registration. As is customary, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) will be providing its Diamond Mineral water for consumption during the event also.
