The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it has not yet activated any mechanism through which it will determine its presidential candidate for the 2011 General Elections and is urging its members and supporters not to be distracted by any kind of speculation in the run-up to its 29th Congress.
The congress is slated for August 2nd and 3rd at the Diamond Secondary School under the theme “Strengthen the Party; Secure the Nation; Accelerate Development”. PPP members will elect a new Central Committee to guide the party’s activities in the immediate future.
Party General Secretary Donald Ramotar at a press conference yesterday told reporters that the Central Committee has noted some speculations about its Presidential Candidate in the media, “particularly those media houses hostile to the PPP.”
He did not elaborate on which media houses he was referring to. However Ramotar said he wanted to assure members that at the appropriate time the established mechanism to determine this would be triggered and the decision will be made known, firstly to party members and then supporters and the general public.
He said the congress is expected to be exciting, occurring at a time of heightened political activities and many challenges which are facing the nation. Party members also plan to analyse the international, socio-economic and political situation as well as other issues which are impacting on the life of the country.
