A drinking spree in the bar of the Garmount Hotel on High Street came to an abrupt end yesterday afternoon, when two men were stabbed and cut with broken bottles following a heated brawl between two groups.
Sheldon Sparman, 30, and Orlando Cumberbatch, 22, of North Sophia were last night receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital for their wounds.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, Sparman, who sustained a stab wound to the neck and a cut in the head, lost a considerable amount of blood and his condition was listed as serious.
Cumberbatch was in a stable condition having received cuts to his neck and back. They arrived at the medical institution around 5 pm.
Over at the bar, an eyewitness to the episode informed Stabroek News that a man who had been drinking with others had left his table and gone to another group nearby. There was an exchange of words and a fight started. The man said that around four men were in one group and around six were in the other.
He told Stabroek News that the men then ran down the stairs with beer and vodka bottles in their hands and continued fighting on High Street in front of the building.
He said that in the process, bottles were broken and two of the men were injured.
When Stabroek News arrived at the hospital, several who knew Sparman were present. This newspaper was told that while Sparman arrived conscious he was bleeding badly. The stretcher he was on confirmed this.
Reports are that Sparman had been drinking with friends on Lombard Street but left and ended up at Garmount where he continued drinking.
