The Neal and Massy Group of Companies will sponsor the 2008 National Independence Intermediate Amateur Boxing championships billed for next Friday to Sunday at the National Gymnasium.
Vice-President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Rudolph Torrington, received the sponsorship cheque from Faye Bispham, Neal and Massy Human Resources Officer at the Group’s head office at Ruimveldt last Friday.
Bispham disclosed that the Group had always supported amateur boxing and said it would continue to do so in the future.
“We have always supported the sport. Only recently we donated a motorcycle to the Amateur Boxing Association to assist with the travelling of the national coach,” she remarked.
Neal and Massy Group of Companies are currently celebrating 40 years of existence in Guyana and several events have been planned for the occasion.
Bispham also noted that the Group was sponsoring the Neal and Massy National 40-over cricket competition, which was recently launched.
Torrington thanked the company for its contribution towards the upcoming tournament and encouraged corporate Guyana to support amateur boxing.
“Amateur boxing is a grassroot sport that attracts many youngsters from depressed communities and we are urging other companies to come forward and support it,” said Torrington.
Also present at the presentation was national coach Carl Franklyn and two of the boxers that are expected to be on show.
Eight gyms are billed to take part in the championships including the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Republicans, Young Achievers, Harpy Eagles, Forgotten Youths, Ricola, Pocket Rocket of Berbice and Essequibo.
The action will start at 18:00 hours each evening.
