Police have taken into custody the driver of the minibus who reversed the vehicle and unknowingly crushed one-year-old Ryan Hemachand.
Hemachand was pronounced dead on arrival at St Joseph Mercy Hospital on Sunday morning.
The driver of the minibus had gone to the home of Hemachand’s family at 37 Better Hope South, East Coast Demerara to pick them up for an outing on the Linden Highway when it is alleged that Ryan Hemanchand was struck down by the vehicle. He was then taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The family was making final preparations before leaving for the outing when the driver ran inside the yard with the child in his hand. Relatives said the man was earlier playing with the child and had left him in the yard and was about to leave to collect ice from another location and the child may have followed him.
He reversed the bus and it hit the child and according to reports, he only realized that he had hit something when he felt an impact.
