The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said it is not responsible for street lighting and persons who wish to have this infrastructure installed in their community should apply to the Lighting Authority.
In a press release, the company said the Lighting Authority was primarily responsible for all street lighting and, in Georgetown its office was housed at the City Council. In rural areas the offices are located at neighbourhood democratic councils and, in small towns, at town councils.
GPL said it is an offence for residents to erect or install streetlights and urged them to contact the Lighting Authority.
The company said that apart from the cost to buy and install the lights, there was a monthly energy charge involved. On average, the cost for operating a 175-watt mercury vapour lamp, commonly sold in stores, which uses about 65 units of electricity is $3,500.
