Dear Editor,
GWI wishes to respond to a letter in last Thursday’s, May 15, 2008, Stabroek News captioned ‘Sewage is overflowing in Stevedore Scheme.’
Sewage from the Stevedore Housing Scheme is stored in the Tucville Pump Station. Currently, that station is operating as per normal; the station’s reception chamber is approximately 6 feet from the surface.
The station’s waste water chamber is also below surface level. That therefore means nothing is wrong with the pump station.
However, GWI believes the problem is within Stevedore. The blockage may occur within the transmission chamber built on the reserved bank of an alleyway, located in Stevedore.
That alleyway is currently inaccessible since the area is cluttered with thick vegetation and snake-infested swamp. GWI’s jetting machines can only vacuum the transmission chamber if the alleyway is cleared. Unfortunately, the maintenance of that alleyway is the responsibility of the Mayor and City Council.
Please see the following photographs depicting the clustered vegetation. [Editor’s note: Six photos were supplied, one of which is reproduced below.]
GWI urges the media to incite the M&CC to clear the Stevedore alleyway, so that the company can vacuum the transmission chamber and relieve the residents from their current discomfort.
The company reminds residents that the sewerage facility is a user system. Residents are responsible for what enters their sewer lines. GWI discovered that many residents dump and flush garbage into the sewer lines. Once garbage is dumped into those lines, it will obviously cause blockage and sewage back up. Residents must desist from dumping garbage into their sewer lines.
Yours faithfully,
Telesha Whyte
