Several of the country’s promising amateur boxers will be on show this weekend in the Neal and Massy-sponsored National Independence Intermediate Championships billed for the National Gymnasium.
Vice-President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Rudolph Torrington told Stabroek Sport yesterday that all systems were in place for the championships billed to start this evening.
According to Torrington, the medical examination and weigh-in of the boxers were expected to take place yesterday and that exercise would determine whether the championships will run until Sunday.
Boxers from Berbice and Essequibo will battle with the counterparts from Georgetown and boxing fans can expect keen competition.
The Berbice pugilists will be representing the Pocket Rocket gym, while the more established clubs including the Guyana Defence Force, Republicans, Forgotten Youth Gym, Ricola of Agricola, Harpy Eagles and Young Achievers will be looking to maintain their supremacy.
Starting time is 6pm each evening.
Last week, the GABA received the sponsorship cheque from Neal and Massy Group of Company at a simple ceremony at the company’s head office at Ruimveldt.
The Neal and Massy Group is celebrating its 40th anniversary in Guyana and according to Fay Bispham, Human Resources officer, decided to sponsor this weekend’s amateur boxing championships.
