The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) says the nation is liable to fail if national priorities are not set “while demonstrating the courage to make uncompromising changes in our governmental and economic system.”
As the nation celebrates its 42nd Independence anniversary the CIOG said the country must prioritize its goals while remembering the struggles endured to get this far. “Guyana’s strength and prosperity are testaments to the enduring power of our founding ideals, among them, that all human beings are created equal, and that liberty is God’s gift to humanity, the birthright of every individual,” the CIOG said in a press release. It said it is grateful for the blessings that freedom represents; for the opportunities it affords and for the right to think, speak and worship freely. At the same time, the group said it is humbled in remembering “the many courageous men and women who have served and sacrificed throughout our history to preserve, protect, and expand these liberties.”
Additionally, it recognises the challenges the country now faces and urges the public not to resign itself to exploiting each other, especially during difficult situations as this is a sign of a lack of conscience. “We must not resign ourselves to manifestations of inclinations to leave the country, and unfortunately also to cases of suicide and HIV/AIDS, a phenomenon which has already reached alarming levels,” the release said. The CIOG said though there are many difficulties ahead, citizens must commit to putting the country and well-being of the people above everything else to achieve success.
