NA to Kwakwani ferry before year-end

The ferry service between New Amsterdam and Kwakwani is to resume before year- end.
Three vessels will become available when the Berbice Bridge is completed and one will be sent for the Kwakwani run.

The bridge is scheduled to be finished in September, a Government Information Agency release noted. The other vessels will be deployed to the Essequibo River.

Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn said that prior to resumption of the service to the area inspections of the wharves along the river will be done to determine what repairs are needed.
With the emphasis being directed at agriculture the reliance on river transport will be greater for these areas where a lot of land is available for agricultural production and as such the service will be useful.
The ferry service to the community was terminated in the early 1990’s after it was determined that a limited number of persons were using the service thus making it uneconomical.
Meanwhile the ministry is looking at the possibility of an additional vessel to service Region One.
