Dear Editor,
The government has spent millions of dollars to build hospitals, health centres and diagnostic centres. Many of them are left unfinished and not fully equipped and the personnel have continued to fleece the public for services which should be free.
Three weeks ago I visited the Suddie Public Hospital and I was very surprised to see the deplorable conditions sick patients have to experience at the outpatient department. There are no chairs, and some of the nurses are very rude and hostile to the sick.
We all pay our income tax and VAT, so that money is collected to pay the nurses and doctors. Some doctors have private clinics. Doctors should spend more of their time in the hospital looking after the sick.
The culture of private profiteering has destroyed Guyana and continues to exterminate its residual morality. Some doctors are involved in the get-rich/er-quick scheme. The government should not allow them to exploit the Guyanese people, especially the poor ones.
Finally, the doctors would do well to remember the Hippocratic Oath.
Yours faithfully,
Mohamed Khan
