The government through the Privatisation Unit (PU) has warned that it will prosecute delinquent lessees and occupiers of its land at various industrial sites and these state lands will be repossessed. Speaking at a recent press conference, Head of the Privatisation Unit Winston Brassington said the PU’s lawyers have been contacted on the issue and several of the lessees and occupiers have been served with letters informing them of the impending court action against them.
Brassington was speaking last week Monday at a press conference dealing with the agreement between the government and Queens Atlantic Investment Incorporated for the lease of the Sanata Complex at Industrial Site Ruimveldt.
According to Brassington, the Privatisation Unit held several talks with lessees and even offered reductions in some cases. Some of the people bought the land but most of them, he said, remained delinquent in the payment of their leases, the rates of which were very low.
The errant lessees have been allocated places at Industrial Site, Ruimveldt, Eccles Industrial Site, East Bank Demerara and Coldingen Industrial Estate, East Coast Demerara.
Brassington said that currently, none of the 19 plot holders at Industrial Site, Ruimveldt was paying on the leases.
