Dear Editor,
I refer to a letter from a reader, Mr Vaidram Persaud (‘What is the status of the Leonora Park cricket ground?’ SN, 3.5.08) that was sent to me for comment.
Some time in July of 2007 the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc received an undated letter from Mr Mohamed Irfaan Ali titled ‘Renovating and Managing of the Leonora Park.’ In the letter he requested that Guysuco allow a broad-based management committee to be formed consisting of the following:
Three members from the Leonora Development Group
One Guysuco representative
One GAWU representative
One SILWF representative
One Private Sector representative
He stated that funds had been secured through commitment from the private sector and that Guysuco would not have to contribute, just agree to the management by committee.
Guysuco responded to Mr Ali by letter on August 13, 2007. The letter stated that Guysuco management had approved of the formation of a management committee to look over the renovation of Leonora Park. We requested a meeting, but to date we have not heard anything.
Guysuco is faced with some tough times ahead with the cut in price from the EU of 36% coming fully into force by October of 2009, and whilst Guysuco cannot contribute financially it will certainly not stand in the way of the community renovating Leonora Park.
Yours faithfully,
Nick Jackson
Chief Executive
