The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security last week conducted an awareness exercise in regions five and six to inform residents about several social services interventions that it provides to support vulnerable groups.
According to a Govern-ment Information Agency (GINA) press release Admin-istrator of the ministry’s Women’s Affairs Bureau Hymwattie Lagan met with No. 52 Village residents to inform them of available options at the ministry to access support. Many residents were not aware of the public assistance and the Difficult Circumstance services provided for disabled, unemployed and other vulnerable persons. Lagan then told them of the need to register for the single parent initiative and services available for women and street children.
The ministry also has a school uniform vouchers programme for vulnerable children to boost school attendance. Lagan said too the ministry has increased pension grants and pensioners also benefit from free spectacles, medical services and drugs from government institutions. They can also access assistance for funeral costs.
GINA said Lagan was accompanied by Personal Assistant to the President Prakash Gossai who made donations to residents, teachers and school children in Region Five.
The donations included toys, books, calculators, pens and shoes to the teachers and children of Shieldstown Nursery school. The items were provided by the Bhuvaneshwar Mandir of New York.
