Defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer” United, led by double strikes from Quincy Madramootoo and Andrew Murray Jnr., hammered eight nails into the side of Uprising Football Club to climb into joint second place with the Guyana Defence Force when action in the Georgetown Football Associa-
tion (GFA) Cellink Plus Premier League competition continued at the Tucville ground last Sunday night.
In the second match of the double header, Santos Football Club, currently in sixth position with three points, were held to a draw by third-placed Fruta Conquerors.
But it was the Alpha/Uprising match that give football fans their entrance-fee’s worth as the defending champions hit the ground hard from the opening whistle.
They held a 3-0 lead at half-time courtesy of goals from Madramootoo (second minute), Kelvin Mc Kenzie (28th minute) and Daniel favorite (30th minute) respectively.
Four minutes after play resumed, Madramootoo got his second goal to send his team, who will depart Guyana on June 2 for French Guiana to partake in the Cope de Guiana’s tournament further into the lead.
They continued to mesmerize their opponents and, in the 58th minute, Murray Jnr. opened his account. He then fed Elton Browne, increased the lead to 6-0 with his strike in the 60th minute. Eighteen minutes later, Frank Dover made it 7-0 and when Murray scored his second in the 80th minute, it was all over for Uprising who having conceded 27 goals whilst scoring three and will need to show signs of improvement in their remaining games.
In the feature match of the evening, Fruta Conquerors, despite creating many scoring opportunities, saw their forwards Franklyn Beresford and Jomo Hinds failing to convert enabling Santos to regroup and hold on for a draw.
With both teams earning one point each, Santos now moves to three points whilst Conquerors have 10. Sunburst Camptown sits atop of the leader board with 16 points with GDF and Alpha United trailing on 11 points.
