Top squash players of yesteryear brought out the Bengay and skimpy shorts to compete in the Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) Farfan and Mendes senior team tournament which began on Tuesday evening at the Georgetown Club.
Some of the top seniors and former national players including Robert Fernandes, Jerozeno Bell, Regan Pollard and GSA president Ronald Burch-Smith were all trying to survive among the cream of the crop of junior players, most of whom are on the squad for the upcoming Caribbean championships.
After the first night of competition, Fernandes and Burch-Smith claimed the only two victories for the Spartans against Alex Arjoon and Ingram Edwards respectively to keep their side level with The Real Thing at two games a piece.
The Real Thing’s Abhishek Singh and Javid Rahaman were the two victors defeating Jean-Claude Jeffrey and Lloyd Fung-A-Fat respectively.
In the other match Shorties, a team packed with five players who have been selected for the Caribbean Championships, defeated Ball Squashers 3-2.
Keisha and Kayla Jeffrey along with Jason-Ray Khalil were in the win column for the Shorties while Raphael deGroot and Alysa Xavier were the only two Ball Squashers with wins for their team.
Meanwhile Beatles and Overdrive are still tied at two games a piece, with Mary Fung-A-Fat and Ashley Khalil wining for Overdrive and Allan Downes and Nyron Joseph winning for Beatles.
