Digicel made good on its promise to donate 50% of its text proceeds from a football match by handing over $250,000 to the St John Boys Orphanage in Plaisance.
In a press release the company said it had made a commitment to make the donation from revenue during the Digicel/Carib Beer Sweet Sixteen Knock-out Football Competition. Patrons at the competitions were given an opportunity to win phones during the matches by texting the word “football” to short code: 1444.
Digicel Guyana Sponsor-ship Executive Shirwin Campbell said the company “wanted to give back to the Plaisance community since all of the matches were played” there.
The orphanage is an important institution in the area and Digicel believes that the contribution will assist in its development. The 48 boys were also given gifts including Digicel radio lunch packs and footballs.
Administrator at the Orphanage Grace Daniels said the institution appreciated the company’s support. She added that “When companies like Digicel come forward to offer assistance it really provides hope for these boys.” The money was handed over on Wednesday.
