The Region Five Health Department urged new food handlers to ensure that food is manufactured under the strictest hygienic conditions, at a one-day seminar hosted recently.
Forty-two participants whose businesses range from school vending to itinerant vending were drawn from Bush Lot to Ithaca, West Berbice for the seminar. The meeting covered topics including basic food; microbiology, personal hygiene and good manufacturing practices.
The participants were also told that they should be appropriately dressed at all times when plying their trade. The Food and Drugs Department said food vendors are required to undergo formal training “before they offer food for sale.”
Regional Health Officer Venus Smartt and environmental officers Ignatius Merai, Alfred Solomon and Amanda James facilitated the forum. Regional Executive Officer Floyd France gave the feature address. The seminar was held at the region’s boardroom at Fort Wellington.
