Traffic Chief Neil Semple says his department has seen a 40% reduction in speeding over the last two months and has attributed it to the fact that motorists know the force now has radar guns.
The force received a boost to its radar gun supply in early April this year from the British High Commission which donated 500 of the devices.
Semple told Stabroek News that the guns have been deployed to all police traffic divisions and are operational and according to him are doing a good job.
“I think because most persons have knowledge that we are using the guns they are trying not to speed …I would say that we have about a 40% reduction on speeding on our roads,” he said. Semple had promised the full enforcement of the speed limits with the full use of the guns.
However he admitted that there were still many persons bent on breaking the law and are being dealt with in the relevant fashion.
Meanwhile Semple urged that in light of the occasional inclement weather, motorists should take greater care on the roads.
He said already there have been four fatal accidents for the month and “even though the statistics are not as high as they were this time last year we are asking persons to try to be extra cautious.”
