The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) recently received Cdn$30,000 from the Islamic Foundation of Toronto towards the purchase of textbooks for its schools.
In a press release the CIOG said it is responsible for five schools at Anna Regina, Essequibo; Meten-Meer-Zorg, Enmore, New Amsterdam, Berbice and the Al Ghazali Islamic Academy in the city. “It is only through an effective education system we can meet the challenges which global pressure exerts on our potential to survive,” the group said. It added that education is critical and it has embarked on a plan to make it accessible to poor and underprivileged children while at the same time providing high services that would attract students from all sections of society. The CIOG said its motto ‘Reaching the Unreached’ regardless of race, religious or class background is exemplified in this effort.
The group said the money will also be used to transport orphans and vulnerable children as currently it subsidizes all those costs. “CIOG and O/VC of Guyana are profoundly grateful to the executives and members of the Foundation.
