Five ATVs valued at $9.5M were handed over to Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) to ease transportation through the area’s difficult terrain.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai handed over the All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to Regional Chairman, Senor Bell in a brief ceremony hosted in the ministry’s compound. Sukhai said the vehicles were the realisation of a commitment by government to lessen the region’s transportation problems. President Bharrat Jagdeo had promised to address this issue during a 2006 Cabinet outreach exercise.
The ATVs will be used mainly to transport goods and are expected to benefit Tuseneng, Paramakatoi, Waipa, Monkey Mountain and Kaibarupai.
Bell said they will boost the region’s existing fleet. Four ATVs were delivered to Kamana, Taruka, Chieung Mouth and Itabac last year.
GINA said Regional Executive Officer Ishwar Dass, Permanent Secretary at the ministry Emile McGarrell and community development officers also attended the ceremony.
