A 69-year-old woman who allegedly stole two-and-a-half pounds of powdered milk from a shop was placed on bail when she appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Patsy George, a book binder, of Lot T81 Guyhoc Gardens pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to her by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that on May 30 at a shop on Sandy Babb Street the accused stole two-and-a-half pounds of Fernleaf milk and two bottles of bleach together worth $2580.
George’s lawyer told the court that her client was arrested quite violently. Her client, she said, was dragged into a minibus and taken past the police station to the shop. “I ain’t buy no milk,” George told the court.
According to the virtual complainant (VC), George came to her shop on the day in question and began calling for various items. She called for a tin of Fernleaf milk and two bottles of bleach, the VC explained. George, the VC said, exchanged the full tin of milk with an empty can she had in her bag, then left and said that she was going to the nearby butcher shop and would return to pay and collect the items.
The VC explained that she became suspicious and sent her sister to follow the woman to see if she was indeed going to the butcher shop. “After my sister left to go behind she I decide to check the items left outside on the shop counter and discovered all ah dem empty,” the VC explained.
The bleach, according to the VC, was used as a weapon by the woman who threw the liquid at them when they pursued her.
George was placed on $25,000 bail and the matter was transferred to Court Four for June 20.
