Dear Editor,
With reference to a report in Stabroek News (4.6.08) entitled ‘Instead of Carifesta – Gov’t should address pressing concerns – Corbin,’ I wish to congratulate Mr Corbin for two reasons:
1. Voicing his party’s support for Carifesta X, a major showcase for Guyanese talent. This event will attract thousands of visitors who will bring in needed foreign exchange to assist the economy.
2. Conducting what appears to be a legitimate, peaceful, and incident-free protest.
Mr Corbin and his supporters are, no doubt, aware that rising food prices are not an issue localized to Guyana. The United Nations has repeatedly stated that there is presently a worldwide food crisis due partly to increased fuel prices. It is ironic that the same issues that Mr Corbin and his supporters took to the streets for are being feverishly addressed by the Guyana government. A few weeks ago, President Jagdeo outlined numerous measures that the government is working on to alleviate the rising cost of living. Unfortunately, there is no universal panacea to the existing crisis.
The rising cost of living is affecting the quality of life for citizens worldwide, including those who reside in the richer countries of North America and Europe. In fact, in the USA, a weak economy coupled with a bad housing market and associated credit fiascos are causing immense pain to Americans through property foreclosures.
I trust that Mr Corbin will continue to put Guyana first,’ and will continue to act responsibly to uplift the lives of all Guyanese in these complex times. True leaders stand out only in defining moments.
Yours faithfully,
Anand Persaud
