Six policemen escaped serious injury yesterday when the vehicle they were in suddenly began swaying on a turn at Airy Hall, Mahaicony. The vehicle was steered into a ditch by the driver to avoid colliding with a mini-bus.
At press time last evening the policemen had all been discharged from the Georgetown Hospital where they were referred for medical attention.
Their names were given as Constables Lawrence Layne, Nandram Miran, Shawn Mc Phoy, Gilbert London, Beveghems and Sergeant Arlington Smith. They arrived at the medical institution shortly after 3 pm yesterday.
Stabroek News was told that they sustained cuts and bruises about the body. Mc Phoy was identified as the driver.
The ranks were on their way to Berbice to relieve their colleagues who were on duty there.
Outside the x-ray department, a man who had stitches on his forehead and whose pants had bloodstains, identified himself as the driver.
He told Stabroek News that they were coming around the turn when the police pick-up they were in, just started swaying. Some of the ranks were sitting in the tray. The rank said that he tried his best to control the vehicle and ended up steering the vehicle down a slope to avoid hitting a mini-bus. He said that the vehicle turned over in a ditch and in the process, two ranks managed to jump out and a third was thrown out.
He told Stabroek News that the vehicle he was driving was involved in several accidents before and that this would make it about the third time that it did not manage to reach Berbice due to an accident.
No one from the bus was injured. The ranks were taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital but were subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Hospital.
