A 29-year-old man who allegedly stole a number of items worth just over $275,000 was remanded to prison when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Devon McCloud of Lot 14 Good Intent, West Bank Demerara initially pleaded guilty to charges of simple larceny, being an unlicensed driver and breach of insurance when they were read to him. However, after listening to his explanations Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle entered not guilty pleas on McCloud’s behalf for all the matters.
It is alleged that between May 31 and June 2 the accused stole one Motorola cellular phone and other items together worth $212,200, between May 26 and 27 he stole one CD player and amplifier together worth $66,000 and on May 22 at Alexander Street, Kitty he drove a minibus without being the holder of a valid driver’s licence and breached his insurance.
According to reports, the minibus was parked outside a gas station on the day in question and McCloud got in and drove away. The prosecution said that this is not the first time the accused has committed an offence like this. As such, they requested that bail be refused since there is a likelihood that the man will commit other such offences if set free.
McCloud was remanded to prison. The simple larceny matters will go to trial on June 13 in Court Four and the traffic matters will continue on the same date in Court One.
