Dear Editor,
I am impressed by the Honourable Mayor of Georgetown’s assertion that he is willing to take a lie detector test, providing there is fairness and balance in terms of its administration, (SN June 12, 2008). And like he proposed, let those who constantly feather and tar him step up to the plate or zip their lips. Any takers?
The surest way to put an end to divisions in this country is for the unvarnished truth of what happened, who it happened to and who caused it to happen, to be laundered before the general public. What is wrong with having all of those in public and political office who willy-nilly assume moral and ethical pedestals, and from those lofty heights proceed to point fingers of accusations at all and sundry submitting themselves to scrutiny of their veracity. And certainly, let the consequence of failure be the same as what is being prescribed for those at the lower power rungs of the Totem Pole.
I do not believe that lie detector application should evolve into a witch hunt, peeking under everyone’s bed and into their pots in order to see what is there or what is cooking. But there are a few important historical issues in our nation that require ventilation, and the apportionment of blame. Not blame in the sense of “gotcha”, but a way of ensuring that events in our history are accurately recorded, and are not left to the whims and fancies of partisan political sycophants.
Corruption in our nation cannot be eradicated by leapfrogging layers of power levels in order to begin truth checking at the bottom. What kind of accountability is there in a society when the buck is constantly being shifted downwards? The cleaning needs to be carried out from a top to bottom basis. Real truth testing should commence in descending order of management and administration stratification at each key and sensitive entity. Way to go “Hammie“.
