Dear Editor,
We live in a country that is full of an abundance of rice, sugar, plantains etc. etc. We also have laws that should guide and assist us to live in a most civilized way, yet we have such a high crime rate for a country where the population is more near six hundred thousand than what we are told statistically.
We read daily of violent crimes being committed on our citizens which is regrettable but how often do we hear about the white collar crimes that are being perpetrated on many of us that go unpunished because many of us are afraid to speak out or the authorities turn a blind eye.
Recently I sold a property and lo and behold before the transport could be passed an opposition was entered by two so-called property agents claiming three percent commission for having arranged the sale. I did some investigating and found that this kind of scam is quite prevalent in Guyana.
How and why these scumbags get away with this crime is because very often people panic not knowing their rights and are advised to make a deal with the culprits since it would cost them a lot more in time and money to have the matter settled in court. We must come forward expose and get rid of these vermin.
Mr Editor the men in question are well known for this practice one is a pastor who has an office on Croal Street, the other operates somewhere in Quamina Street. These men and others like them are low down extortionists and must be exposed. The courts should deal with them and send them to jail.
There are also those who squat on people’s property and claim prescriptive rights when they are requested to remove. Then before you can evict them they run to a lawyer who assists them by getting a judge to issue an injunction against an order that might have given by another judge for their eviction. I can see why there is the saying “crime pays”.
In conclusion I would advise that anyone having this problem seek legal advice and not give in to these extortionists. I will be seeking legal redress in my matter. Oh, I forgot they did not get a penny from me. Thanks to my lawyer.
Yours faithfully,
Ovid Holder
