In an effort to unearth hidden talent, the Culture ministry is to host a regional talent search starting mid-month.
Minister Dr Frank Anthony told a press conference recently that the talent search will be held “in regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 which are all Carifesta community festival locales.” According to a press release, several Carifesta committees have been set up countrywide following visits from a team from the Secretariat.
Anthony said the talent search comprises five categories: drama/dramatic poetry, music, song – with emphasis on new arrangements of folk songs, monologue – talk culture/stand up comedy and dance.
“We are throwing our nets far and wide to capture a variety of talent,” Dr Paloma Mohamed, Artistic Director of Carifesta said. She said the Secretariat “didn’t want to be too prescriptive regarding the content of pieces that will be showcased.
We are looking for raw talent. However it must be morally acceptable.”
The search will begin in the said regions where a panel of judges will choose the best talents showcased. The finalists will then compete at the National Cultural Centre where the winners will be selected to represent Guyana at the festival.
