The start of the eagerly anticipated Inter Sub-Association under-23 tournament scheduled for tonight has been postponed until further notice.
Linden, New Amsterdam, Georgetown against East Bank were the teams scheduled to be in action tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall but according to Technical Director of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan, the federation decided to play the games at a later date to give the players a break on Father’s Day and to allow basketball fans an opportunity to enjoy the NBA finals.
“We decided to postpone the games firstly because it is Father’s Day and we want to give the players a break to be home with their families and secondly, because the NBA finals are on today,” Cadogan said yesterday.
He added:“How things are going in the [NBA] finals, tomorrow’s [today] game may very well be the final game and I know that many basketball fans will be glued to their televisions.”
Cadogan said the two factors stood a chance of seriously affecting spectator turnout and it would not be fair to have the players give their best effort without the crowd support.
Although a new date has not yet been confirmed for the two games, Cadogan said that they will not affect the schedule of next weekend’s games.
The games which are scheduled for next Saturday evening are Georgetown vs Linden and East Bank versus New Amsterdam in the under-23 championships.
On Sunday, New Amster-dam will play host when both the male and the females under-23 travel to NA for a doubleheader.
