A 58-year-old Blairmont Sugar Estate labourer of Cotton Tree Village, West Berbice died after he was struck down by a vehicle that was transporting a senior police officer around 6 am yesterday.
Reports are that Angad Chand left home on his bicycle to purchase fish and was returning when the vehicle, a white Toyota Mark II, PKK 885 that was heading in the direction of the Rosignol Stelling hit him from behind.
Residents said that on impact the man was pitched a short distance away from where the accident occurred. They said that before they could go out to investigate, the man was placed in the back of the car and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital.
According to a police press release, Chand was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The release said too that “a Guyana Police Force motor vehicle driven by a Lance Corporal was proceeding south on the eastern side of the Public Road when it is alleged that Angad Chand attempted to cross the road behind a line of vehicles proceeding in the opposite direction and was struck down.”
The man’s son, Arjune Chand told Stabroek News that his father left home early yesterday morning to purchase fish. He said that a relative who lived close to the scene informed him about what had happened.
He said they left to go to the hospital but staff there did not allow them to see the body. “They tell we that the body damage and we can’t get to see it.”
A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed today.
