After finishing last year’s tournament one position from the bottom, Milerock Football Club returned this year to make amends.
They have now climbed to the top of the leader board in the Upper Demerara Football Association’s (UDFA) Coca Cola-sponsored first division league following victories over Topp XX and Winners Connections respectively.
Playing at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground Friday night, Milerock first defeated Winners Connections by a 2-1 margin then returned on Sunday to defeat Topp XX 3-2 to take over the top position on the points table.
In their game against Winners Connections, Milerock, compliments of a double strike from Dion Granderson who scored in the 27th and 31st minutes, led 2-0 at lemon time.
However, Orden Bovell pulled one back for his team in the 74th minute but when the final blast of the referee’s whistle went, Milerock was the winner.
In their game against then points leaders Topp XX on Sunday, they rode on the back of an Andre Chester double to come out on top.
Chester got his first goal for Milerock in the 19th minute as Milerock took a 1-0 lead into the break.
On the resumption of play, Steve Brewley increased the lead for Milerock when he found the back of the net in the 55th minute.
Shevon Seaforth helped reduce things for Topp XX with his 65th minute strike and when leading goal scorer of the tournament so far, Curth Murphy found the back of the net for his first of the match and eighth of the tournament in the 70th minute, both teams were suddenly playing on a level field with the scores locked at two goals apiece.
But Chester ensured that his team took the lead when he scored his second goal in the 78th minute and at the end of regulation time, Milerock came away with the win and sole leadership of the points table with 12 points.
Topp XX sits uneasily in second position on 10 points, one more than Blueberry Hill United who is in third position.
Action in the competition will continue this evening from 18:00hrs with another double header at the same venue. In the first game, Winners Connections who is in fourth position on eight points will take on Silver Shattas.
Amelia’s Ward United has seven points, the same as Silver Shattas and should they score a win over the second-placed Blue Berry Hill in the feature game tonight, they will plummet to the second position with Topp XX.
Both games are rescheduled first round games that were hampered by the weather.
