In conjunction with the observing of World Olympic Day by all National Olympic Committees (NOC) on Monday June 23, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) will be holding its annual Olympic Day Run, Walk, Jog and team 10km run this Sunday.
According to a press release from the GOA, the run is usually staged every year on the Sunday closest to World Olympic Day.
This year, the event is programmed to begin at 6am outside the YMCA ground Thomas Lands before participants proceed down to Camp Street before turning North unto Carifesta Avenue and following the course on the Rupert Craig Highway just over three miles before reaching the half way point at Turkeyen. In their return, participants will head West down the Rupert Craig Highway, before reaching Vlissengen Road where they will proceed South until they get to Thomas Road for the final straight before the finish line at the place of origin.
The GOA will also be staging its second annual 10km team run which was won last year by the Progressive Youth Club Police.
This year the first place prize is $48,000, while second place is $36,000 and third place $24,000.
The rules of the team run state that each team must be made up of three males and three females and they must be affiliated to the same athletics club or sports discipline.
The GOA also encourages participation from the joint services.
Registration for this event has been extended to midday on Friday and according to the GOA the first 500 registered participants will receive t-shirts in addition to their International Olympic Committee certificates (IOC).
