A 32-year-old man who allegedly harboured a wanted man was remanded to prison when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court Thursday.
Sheldon Williams of 74 Seventh Field, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of harbouring a criminal when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that on June 15 Williams knowingly harboured Mark Roydon Williams, also known as Roydon Durant or ‘Smallie’, whose photograph has been publicly displayed or published by the police as a wanted person in the offence of murder at Lusignan and other places. Mark Royden Williams was taken before the court yesterday.
Attorney-at-law Roger Yearwood made an application for bail on his client’s behalf. According to him, on the said day Williams, who is Durant’s cousin, was expecting their grandmother to arrive here from Trinidad. He explained that Durant went to his client’s house to see their grandmother.
The lawyer said that his client spent no time with the wanted man since the police followed him and were able to apprehend him shortly after he arrived at Williams’ home.
According to the prosecution, harbouring a wanted person is a serious offence and investigations are still continuing so bail should be refused.
Williams was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
